Although the word, “Hypnosis” can create a sense of the mystical or magical, the state of hypnosis is a normal and natural relaxed state of mind that we move in and out of during our day. Two of the times everyone experiences this relaxed state, every day, is when we are drifting off to sleep or waking up. We often move into the state of hypnosis at other times, such as when we daydream, drive on auto-pilot, or become engrossed in a really good movie or book.
Although all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, there are some misconceptions or concerns some people have about hypnosis that are often asked. Such as…
What do you mean all hypnosis is self-hypnosis?
Just like during the state of mind when you’re driving on auto-pilot or reading a book, or if someone is guiding you into a state of relaxation, you are always in control. You have a choice where to put your attention, whether or not you choose to relax, or if you prefer to go into or come out of hypnosis at a particular time.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
With a resounding “no,” you cannot get stuck in hypnosis. If the person guiding you into hypnosis were to suddenly stop, you would either come out of hypnosis immediately or you might choose to just drift off into a relaxing sleep and awaken when you are ready.
Will I reveal secrets or act in an embarrassing way?
Again, the answer is “no.” While in hypnosis, you are always aware and in control. You would talk about the things you wanted to share or act in a manner that you choose. Well, what about people who cluck like a chicken on stage…remember, they choose to go on stage knowing they would be asked to do silly things for entertainment. They must have wanted to cluck like a chicken!!
What if I cannot be hypnotized?
Very few people are unable to be guided into hypnosis, if they are willing. If you have the ability to focus, imagine, and follow simple directions you should be able to go into hypnosis. Conversely, you cannot be hypnotized against your will. Have fun and take the quiz to the right!
Does being hypnotized interfere with my religion?
Some religions do not support “being hypnotized.” As a professional, I would never offer a suggestion that would interfere with your beliefs. Since you are aware and in control, if such a suggestion were inadvertently made, you would either reframe it to fit your beliefs or dismiss it entirely.
